Chanson

Chanson is a french poem by Jacques Prévert, in this poem he talks about his love, his other half. Chanson translates to the word Song, and I believe that this, because Jacques Prévert was relating love to a song. It may not be very long, but it gets the relationship and love across in only about 10 lines. When reading his work, this was one of my favorite pieces of his poetry book, I like how he says “Nous sommes tous les jours, Mon amie, Nous sommes toute la vie, Mon amour” (Prévert, pg. 88-89, 2-5). These lines when translated into english read, “ It’s everyday, My friend, It’s all of life, My love.” I really adore this idea of having your partner in life be your friend everyday, and that all of life they are your love. It ends with these five lines, that I think describe in alot of ways what its like to be in love. “Nous nous aimons et nous vivons, Nous vivons et nous nous aimons, Et nous ne savons pas ce que c’est que la vie, Et nous ne savons pas ce que c’est que le jour, Et nous ne savons pas ce que c’est que l’amour,” and in english is written as “We love each other and we live, We live and love each other, and do not know what this life is, and do not know what this day is, and do not know what this love is” (Prévert, pg. 88-89, 6-10). I think these lines were beautifully written, and they describe the fact that in life we love and live, but we do not know what any of it truly means, but do it anyways.
